FOSHAN:A journey of traditional Cantonese art (II)
    2014-06-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Foshan is a historical and cultural city located in the center of Guangdong Province. It has been one of the representatives of Cantonese culture, cuisine, martial arts and folk arts for thousands of years. Why not take a trip over a weekend to experience the artistic side of the beautiful old Cantonese city? Here are more options for you to explore its culture and arts.

    Pujun Road South

Craftsmen in Foshan are also known for their distinctive woodblock pictures. Pujun Road South used to be the largest area in the city to produce traditional Chinese New Year pictures.

The woodblock picture was originated in the Yongle Period of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and flourished during the Qianlong (1735-1795) and Jiaqing (1796-1820) periods of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The themes of Foshan New Year pictures run the range from gate gods to festival pictures and depictions of folk customs.

The woodblock picture in Foshan also uses techniques for making Foshan-style paper-cuts, colored paintings, woodblock paper-cuts and other folk art forms. Most of the pictures use red color, which has lucky connotations in traditional Chinese culture. They also incorporate green, yellow, and black colors, and all of the paints are made from local materials with traditional techniques.

Nowadays, a woodblock picture workshop of a family surnamed Feng is the only traditional one remaining in the area. Over the past 100 years, the family’s workshop, Fengjunji, has been representative of the New Year picture in the Republic of China period. According to the urban construction plan of Foshan, Feng’s workshop will be demolished in the near future. So it is better to visit there soon to experience an immersed sense of the traditional craft.

Transport: Take a coach from Shenzhen to Foshan and take a taxi to the road. You can also take a train to Guangzhou and take Metro Guangfo Line to Pujun Road North Station.

    Lingnan Tiandi

Situated at the center of Zumiao Commercial Street in downtown Foshan, Lingnan Tiandi is a must-go place for shopping, relaxation and sightseeing. With reference to the successful model of Shanghai Xintiandi Redevelopment project, there are big shopping malls and plazas where all kinds of local handicrafts can be found. It also has many famous restaurants that serve fresh, tasty local delicacies.

Just like Xintiandi in Shanghai, there are a total of 22 traditional Cantonese-style ancient buildings in the area, and artistic cafés, pubs and teahouses are introduced to make the area a perfect blend of traditional and modern cultures.

In the area, there is an Ancestors’ Temple, which was once the most famous historical attraction in the city. The temple was built in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) and was mainly used as a place where sacrifices to Xuantian God (the God of Water in Taoism) were made.

Having now been rebuilt and enlarged, the temple covers an area of about 3,500 square meters and has a series of well-built architectural features, such as the Wanfu Stage, Lingying Archway, Bell and Drum Tower, Jinxiang Pool, Sanmen Gate, the front and main halls and Qingzhen Tower. The admission fee for the temple is 20 yuan per adult.

Transport: Take the train to Guangzhou and take the Metro Guangfo Line to Zumiao Station.
