    Watson named goodwill ambassador

    The United Nations’ gender equality body U.N. Women on July 8 appointed British actress Emma Watson as a goodwill ambassador* to advocate for the empowerment* of young women.

    “Being asked to serve as U.N. Women’s Goodwill Ambassador is truly humbling,” Watson, 24, said in a statement.

    “Women’s rights are something so inextricably* linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life, that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting,” she said.

    

    HK actor detained for drug use

    Roy Cheung, a Hong Kong actor best known for his gangster* roles, was detained in Beijing for allegedly using drugs, domestic media reported on July 10.

    Cheung was caught at a hotel in Chaoyang District on July 2, and police seized 1.15 grams of marijuana* in his luggage.

    

    A baby girl for Wang Lee-hom

    Chinese-American singer-songwriter Wang Lee-hom announced on July 10 that his wife gave birth to a baby girl.

    Wang, 38, shared a photo of the baby’s feet on his microblog, saying that his anticipated baby had arrived, without giving more information.

    

    Emmy Awards nominations announced

    The Primetime* Emmy Awards 2014 nominations were announced in Los Angeles on July 10.

    The fantasy saga “Game of Thrones” emerged as the leader, with 19 nominations.

    “Breaking Bad” was next in line with 16 nods* for its final season, including best drama and best actor for Bryan Cranston. Other top nominees included a pair of ambitious miniseries*, “American Horror Story: Coven” and “Fargo.”(SD-Agencies)
