    Man avoids jail after joke

A businessman from Macao has received a jail term of 18 months with a two-year suspension* for causing a woman to drown in what he claimed was a joke.

The Zengcheng People’s Court in Guangdong said it granted leniency* to the man surnamed He, because he had paid HK$4.75 million (US$613,000) to the victim’s family in compensation and has “gained their understanding.” He, 35, a member of the advisory body of Foshan, grabbed a woman in her 20s, whom he did not know, while she was playing on a floating platform and jumped into a reservoir as a “joke” last October.

    Local hospital saves boy

A 13-year-old boy from Guangdong Province who suffered from rare symptoms of a not uncommon disease was rescued by doctors at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Shenzhen Hospital.

The boy, surnamed Luo, was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus-related hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH*), a life-threatening disease of hyperinflammation, but he showed some atypical symptoms, such as chronic diarrhea* and gastrointestinal* bleeding, doctors said.

    Anti-Occupy march held

Anti-Occupy Central* demonstrators took to the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday afternoon in a show of strength aimed at taking the wind out of the sails of those who plan to bring the city’s financial center to a standstill*.

The Anti-Occupy Central supporters started from Victoria Park in Causeway Bay and marched to Chater Road in Central. Organizers of the rally, the Alliance for Peace and Democracy, say the silent majority of the city’s 7 million residents do not support the Occupy movement.

    ICloud center set in China

Apple has established its first iCloud data center in China — using a State-owned telecom company’s storage services.

The unprecedented move was meant to soothe Chinese consumers who have been complaining about the slow speed of iCloud connectivity, according to Apple.
