Water meter recorder snaps pictures of life
    2015-01-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

LIU TAO, a water meter recorder in Hefei City, Anhui Province, has become an Internet celebrity after uploading his photos of daily life online. He has been dubbed “the people’s artist” and “the photographer with a big brain hole,” an Internet catch phrase that refers to a person who thinks differently or outside of the box.

Liu, 32, said he lives an ordinary life, scurrying from one apartment to another to record the numbers on residents’ water meters. He loves painting and gradually developed his interest in photography in his spare time. Usually, he will take photos of people in different communities after work. Unlike other photographers who spend time and money traveling around to take photos, Liu said he prefers to stay in his city and snap scenes that seem familiar but unique to individuals. Liu takes about 50 pictures a day and edits them at night. He said his inspiration comes from daily life and his desire to discuss social issues with others. Some of his works reveal his sense of humor while others capture some unflattering moments in life.

“I try to avoid communicating with those who I shoot,” Liu said. “I want to keep some distance and reflect real scenes. I want my pictures to share my views and impressions of society.”
