Top 10 most beautiful villages near Shenzhen (III)
    2015-04-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

IT’S the time of year to explore the beautiful scenery around Shenzhen. Here are more recommendations on our Top 10 list.

    Xuanxing Village, Conghua

Located in the central area of Hot Spring Township in Conghua, Xuanxing Village is a small ancient village built during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). It was selected as one of the “top 10 most beautiful villages in Guangzhou” in 2014.

Most of the existing houses in the village were built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The houses are so well-preserved that many films and dramas choose to shoot scenes here.

Liu Temple is located in the center of the village. Built in the Qing Dynasty, the temple is the most sacred place for the villagers and has hosted many ceremonies and celebrations for hundreds of years. The temple is now also a museum, displaying ancient furniture and appliances collected from the villagers.

Another important landmark for the village is Lovers’ Bridge, which is also the only entrance to the village. It is said that the bridge was built to commemorate a couple who loved each other so much that they ended their lives in order not to be separated by an evil rich man.

When visiting the village, relaxing at a spa is a must-try activity. There are several popular hot spring resorts in the area, which also feature other leisure activities such as cycling and hiking.

Local specialties include tofu, honey and herbal tea.

Route: Drive to the village via Dongguan-Shenzhen Expressway, Tianluo Mo

    Daling Village, Panyu

Daling Village in Panyu, Guangdong, is the first National Historical Cultural Village in Guangdong Province. The 873-year-old village was known as the home of many scholars and high government officials in feudal times.

The village is a typical Guangdong-style ancient village with well-preserved architecture covering more than 9,000 square meters.

There are many streets in the village. Among these, a street called Wuban Baishi Street is unique. The 400-meter street was built in 1897 during the Qing Dynasty. On one side of the street, there are ancient buildings built with strong Cantonese characteristics dating back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties; on the other side, there are modern buildings with modern facilities, which are in sharp contrast yet create a very interesting scene.

There are also many temples and towers in the village. Some must-see spots include Longjin Bridge, Yongsi Mansion, Zhenshou Gate and Shaoqing Water Reservoir.

Route: Drive to the village via Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, Qinghe River, Shiqing Road and Guokang Boulevard.

    Langtou Village, Guangzhou

Located in Huadu District, Langtou Village was recognized as the second National Historical Cultural Village in a recent national survey. The 643-year-old village is by far the largest and best-preserved ancient village in Guangdong.

Originally built during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), Langtou Village has more than 380 ancient buildings with architectural styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Covering an area of more than 60,000 square meters, there are 18 ancient alleys and more than 10 gate towers in the village.

Must-see spots include the Fengshui Pool, Qingyun Bridge, Renrui Memorial Arch, Youlan Temple and Jiezhi Pavilion.

Another highlight of Langtou Village is its education culture.

Since the village was built, more than 14 people passed the highest imperial examinations and 19 passed the provincial-level examinations in the Ming and Qing dynasties. This is very rarely seen among villages in Huadu and in Guangdong Province.

Route: Drive to the village via Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, South China Expressway and Raocheng Expressway. (Wang Yuanyuan)
