    Hou Hsiao-hsien wins Cannes best director award

    Taiwan’s Hou Hsiao-hsien scooped the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday for his slow-burning minimalist drama “The Assassin.”

    The film is set in ninth-century China, at the end of the Tang Dynasty, with Asian megastar Shu Qi playing a highly trained female assassin.

    Refugee film wins Palme D’or

    The Cannes Film Festival jury on Sunday night gave the coveted Palme D’Or to a closely observed drama about illegal immigrants. “Dheepan,” which was gripping and subtly detailed, was directed by French favorite Jacques Audiard.

    The biggest surprise, however, was the decision to share the award for best actress between Emmanuelle Bercot and Rooney Mara, snubbing crowd-favorite Cate Blanchett.

    Rediscovered ‘My Fair Lady’ songs to be performed

    Seven songs dropped from the musical “My Fair Lady” will be heard in public for the first time in almost 60 years when they are performed soon.

    The scores were found in an archive by the University of Sheffield’s Dr. Dominic McHugh and will be performed during a special concert in Sheffield.

    Ng Chun-yu settles disputes

    Hong Kong actor Francis Ng Chun-yu said at a sportswear publicity event on Saturday in Beijing that he has settled his disputes with Hunan TV regarding compensation for an injury his son sustained during a shoot for the station’s popular reality show, “Where Are We Going, Daddy?” last September.

    On Tuesday, Ng expressed frustration during the premiere of his new film “Love Without Distance” in Beijing, saying it’s totally unacceptable that his boy hasn’t yet received compensation.
