    Guo Boxiong faces prosecution

    Guo Boxiong, a former Chinese military leader, was expelled from* the Communist Party of China (CPC) for taking bribes*, according to a decision made at a meeting of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau on July 30.

    Investigations found that Guo took advantage of his post to seek promotions and benefits for others and accepted bribes personally or through his family.

    

    Causes of escalator death

    A design flaw was found in the escalator* that “swallowed up” a woman in Jingzhou City in Central China’s Hubei Province.

    The accident occurred on Sunday morning in the Anliang department store. Xiang Liujuan, 30, fell through a loose panel at the top of the ascending* escalator. At the moment, she pushed her 2-year-old son to safety, but she was dragged into the machinery. She was dead when firefighters managed to cut open the escalator shaft* about four hours later.

    

    Jordan loses trademark suit

    A Beijing court has dismissed a trademark case brought by U.S. basketball superstar Michael Jordan against a company using a name and logo similar to his Nike-produced brand, a report said.

    He asked Chinese authorities in 2012 to revoke the trademark of Qiaodan Sports Co., accusing the sportswear firm of misleading consumers about its ties to the six-time NBA champion.

    

    Nanjing bans minors under 6 from being alone

    No child under age 6 can be left alone without proper care in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, according to a new local draft law released for public scrutiny*.

    The draft adds that minors must not be physically harmed by parents or guardians, or be subjected to chronic* hunger as punishment. According to the draft law children are also protected against the use of insulting language by their guardians. In addition, children under 6 years old, or those who require special care due to physical disabilities, are not to be left alone.(SD-Agencies)
