Conditionally loyal
    2015-08-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

People’s loyalty shouldnot be unconditional. Justice, humanity, and nationalism are important too.

Wen Tianxiang (1236-1283), a prime minister during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), was truly loyal to his nation. He commanded the army to fight against the invading Mongols. He escaped from death at least 20 times but finally surrendered after he was captured by the Mongols. But he would not betray his nation and chose death.

Before he was executed, he fell to his knees and faced towards the south, where his nation was, and recited famous lines from a poem: “Who won’t die in the life from the ancient? / The red heart to be left for shining the history!” Many people salute and support his loyal behavior, and he is treated as a hero.

There’s a well-known character named Li Kui in the novel “Heroes of the Marshes.” He was always loyal to Song Jiang, his leader. But in order to avoid rebellion by Li after the death of Song, Song tricked Li into drinking poisonous wine. Upon learning what Song had done, Li didn’t blame Song and died following his instructions. This is an example of stupid loyalty, which shouldn’t be supported.

In WWII, the German army was truly loyal to Hitler, but they were fascists. Similarly, the imperial Japanese army was so loyal to their emperor that they murdered many people when they invaded China. They even killed themselves to avoid being captured. These are also examples of stupid loyalty and shouldn’t be supported.

So, to sum up, true loyalty doesn’t mean following someone unconditionally, but should be based on the right judgement.
