Explore the Hakka's 'sacred mountain'
    2015-11-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

LOCATED in Liancheng County, Fujian Province, Guanzhi Mountain is known as the “sacred mountain” of the Hakka people. The shape of the mountain is like the crown of a xiezhi, a strange legendary Chinese beast, hence the mountain’s name, “Guanzhi.”

    The mountain

Covering an area of 123 square kilometers, the scenic area is a combination of mountains, lakes, rivers, caves and temples.

Lianzhi Peak, shaped like a ganoderma, is the main peak. From the summit you can enjoy a panoramic view of villages dotted in the green fields toward the west. To the east, high cliffs stand majestically, stacked one on top of another. Wulao Peak to the southwest rises close to Lingzhi Peak.

Guanzhi Mountain is also blessed with notable manmade landscapes, among which are the academies of classical learning built during the Song (960-1279), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The major ones include Yangzhi Pavillion, Qiushi Academy, Xiuzhu Academy and Dongshan Cottage.

Other historical sites include temples such as Fayun Temple and Lingzhi Temple, both built in the late Song Dynasty.

Due to its beautiful scenery, the mountain has attracted countless scholars, writers and poets, who often leave precious calligraphy and paintings.

    The villages

There are many ancient villages with numerous ancient houses in the Guanzhi Mountain area. Among them, Peitian Ancient Village is the most famous one.

Located at the foot of the mountain, the village is known as the “most beautiful ancient village” in Fujian Province. With a history of more than 800 years, the village is a well-kept ancient complex with the typical architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Similar to the Hakka Earthen Buildings in Yongding County, the village’s ancient buildings form another unique example of the architectural style of the Hakka.

The ancient complex consists of 30 dwellings, 21 ancestral temples, six academies, two memorial archways and a 1,000-meter ancient street. At present, there are about 300 families living in the village. The various ornaments on the buildings represent the development of Hakka art and culture.

The village is also famous for its academies of classical learning. It was not only home to traditional Confucian schools, but also had schools of agriculture and crop cultivation.

Most interestingly, there was a school called “Rongqiju,” which was designed only for women. Unlike most places in China, women in the village were encouraged to learn skills and knowledge at school. At this ancient school, women would take courses on morality, manners, handicrafts, cooking and even business operations. Nowadays, the school is a place to showcase traditional Chinese art.

Another village worth visiting in the area is Luosheng Village.

    The cuisine

The mountain area is also an ideal place to experience traditional Chinese cuisine.

There are many local eateries on the mountain, which offer local dishes that use fresh ingredients and organic products. The prices at these places are very affordable.

The most famous delicacy in the area is rice wine from Luosheng Village, which is also located close to the mountain.

The village also has a history of 900 years. Although it is not as well-preserved as Peitian Village, it is still famous for its traditional rice wine production.

There are many ancient rice wine distilleries in the village that use traditional techniques to produce the most authentic Hakka-style rice wine.

Recommended local cuisines include wontons, beef hotpot and various flavors of rice cakes.

Transport: Take a high-speed train from Shenzhen North Railway Station to Longyan, Fujian Province. Take a coach to Liancheng County from Longyan and take a taxi to the mountain.
