Gaokao registration in Guangdong starts this week

Registration for the gaokao (the National College Entrance Exams) for 2016 started on December 1 in Guangdong Province. Grade-12 students can register online or in person at the registration locations.

Students without a Shenzhen hukou are also allowed to sit for the exam in Shenzhen if they meet certain requirements and will not need to go back to their places of birth for the exam. This is the first time non-Shenzhen hukou students will be able to apply for exam in Guangdong Province.

The registration period will be open for 10 days, from December 1 to 10. The first week is the preregistration period and the last five days are the confirmation stage. Candidates can use the initial password assigned to them to log onto the official website for registration and to confirm their eligibility, confirm their personal information and submit their photographs and fingerprints.

According to Lu Wanwei, the director of the city’s students’ enrollment and examination office, “To be eligible to take the gaokao in Shenzhen, students need to provide evidence that they live in a legal and stable place and that their parents have legal and stable employment. Also, non-Shenzhen hukou students must have paid social insurance and have lived in Shenzhen and studied at local schools for three years.”

Lu also said that students who fail to meet these requirements can apply to sit the national exam in Shenzhen if they have written permits from the provincial examination offices where their hukou is registered.

The municipal exam office estimates around 45,000 students will register for next year’s gaokao. The examination office wishes to remind students to be cautious when filling out their personal information because incorrect information will directly affect their final enrollment.
