Best secret spring destinations in China
    2016-04-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SPRING has always been an ideal season for traveling and exploring the country. If you are a fan of exploring “unknown worlds,” here are more beautiful spring destinations that are less crowded.

    Jiayang, Sichuan Province

A short drive from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, Jiayang is a small and quiet town that has remained fundamentally untouched by economic change.

The town is under the administration of Bagou Town, a coal town that has faced a decreasing population since the 1980s.

Not many people know that a traditional-style steam train still runs between Jiayang and Bagou every day.

The narrow-gauged rail line was built to connect Bagou with the river town of Shibanxi in 1958 and has six intermediate stops along its 19.8-kilometer route.

Although used primarily for the transportation of coal, it continues to provide a passenger service. Until 2012 there was no road to Bagou and the town could only be reached by train or motorcycle.

There are also many famous attractions in the neighboring areas, including the Leshan Giant Buddha and E’mei Mountain.

As one of the places that Sichuan-style cuisine came from, don’t forget to try the sweet duck and steamed pork in rice powder.

Transport: Fly to Chengdu from Shenzhen airport and take a bus to Leshan City. Take a taxi to Bagou.

    Qiyun Mountain, Anhui Province

Known as the White Mountain in ancient times, Qiyun Mountain is situated at the foot of Huangshan Mountain, Anhui Province.

The mountain has nine peaks and is famous for its steep terrain, clear water, oddly shaped rocks and tranquil caves.

The mountain was one of the four sacred Taoist mountains in China with many ancient Taoist temples and sites. It is an ideal place to learn about and experience Taoism.

The mountain’s Yuehua Street has simple and elegant Anhui-style houses, scattered among which are temples built against the mountain. The Supreme Simplicity Temple of the Mysterious Heaven is considered the most magnificent.

Transport: Take a train to Huangshan City, Anhui Province, and take a taxi to the mountain.

    Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province

Yangzhou is an elegant city that sits at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal in southern Jiangsu Province. The city has a history of 2,480 years. It has been a symbol of natural beauty in China since ancient times. It is famous for its rainy spring days and architecture that ranges from the simple to the magnificent.

Slender West Lake has always been seen as the “soul of natural beauty” in Yangzhou. Like a long, wide ribbon, its beauty lies in the rippling water, winding dikes, arching bridges, dancing willows and colorful flowers along the bank.

Jinshan Temple is another landmark in Yangzhou. A lot of Chinese myths are set at the temple and many paintings and pieces of calligraphy were inspired by it.

When visiting Yangzhou, local teahouses are recommended. Yangzhou people are known for their relaxed lifestyles. There are many traditional teahouses and restaurants in the old town areas.

Transport: Fly to Yangzhou from Shenzhen airport. (Wang Yuanyuan)
