The 3rd annual Shenzhen Bay International Schools Music Festival was hosted by Shen Wai International School (SWIS) over two days in mid-April.

Featuring the conductors David Sheaffer from the United States, Paul Jarman from Australia, and SWIS’s Sherry Liu, the combined choirs of SWIS, Buena Vista Concordia, the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen, and QSI performed 10 songs in the final concert themed “A Global Community — We All Belong.”

Over two days, 9- to 15-year-old choral students rehearsed. New friends were made and old connections renewed.

The final concert included instrumental ensembles from the BASIS International School, Buena Vista Concordia and the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen. Members of the SWIS dance team also performed.

The concert was warmly received, and it featured audience participation when the choir taught the Finnish song “Aleleloila.” The audience also sang in English, Chinese, Georgian and Hebrew.

Jarman conducted his composition “Ancient City,” which encouraged participants to ponder societies from ancient times. Included in the program was the song “A Song to End All War” accompanied by SWIS Grade 9 student Helen Feng at the piano.

Sheaffer and Jarman visited a number of participant schools and led workshops and choir rehearsals.

SWIS students learned Iranian melodies on the recorder, the 8 bar blues on guitar, and lots of musical games and how to sing new songs. Grade 6 students practiced on their band instruments.

The music teachers from the international schools are in the process of planning the fourth festival in the coming year.Students perform at the 3rd annual Shenzhen Bay International Schools Music Festival.
