China’s Wang, Zhang advance at French Open
    2016-May-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

FRENCH teenager Tessah Andrianjafitrimo suffered a nightmare debut at Roland Garros when she was crushed 6-0, 6-0 by China’s Wang Qiang on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old wildcard was completely overwhelmed as she experienced the dreaded “double bagel” on court 17.

She admitted that next time she should listen to her coach.

“I didn’t listen to my coach a lot. I wanted to be on my own, but I have lots of things to learn. I’m still a young player, and I wanted to behave as an adult would behave,” she told a news conference.

“I have learned that I should stick to my routine. I should listen to my coach, even more today.”

Andrianjafitrimo said she had never experienced such a loss and was not looking for excuses.

“Frankly, I did not expect such a match. A double bagel. It hurts. Since I started tennis, I have never experienced such a situation. It does hurt a lot,” the world number 311 said.

“Maybe I didn’t prepare well the French Open. So basically I’m reaping the bad fruit that I have sowed.”

Asian Games champion Wang will next play 12th-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who rallied past Czech qualifier Katerina Siriakova 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Australian Open quarterfinalist Zhang Shuai also breezed her way into the second round, resuming a suspended match from 5-5 in the first set and coming out as the eventual winner over 31-year-old Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan 7-5, 6-2.

Zhang’s next opponent is the 21st-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur, who will partner up the Tianjin native in the women’s doubles play.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams’ defense of her French Open title is off to a comfortable start, with a 6-2, 6-0 first-round win against Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia that took just 42 minutes.

The top-ranked Williams barely broke a sweat in Tuesday’s last match on the Philippe Chatrier Court. (SD-Agencies)
