Eagle-eyed worker prevents possible factory fire
    2016-May-30  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A FIRE near an urban village in Longhua New Area was put out by firefighters before causing any casualties, according to sznews.com.

Li Shaotong, a 25-year-old staffer with the community management center in the Guanhu area, saw a fire breaking out on a hill near a factory in Hengkeng River Village, Longhua New Area, on Friday night when he was registering information about the transient population in the village.

About 10 firefighters arrived at the scene eight minutes after Li called the police, and the fire was soon put out. A firefighter said the fire may have been caused by a cigarette, and could have spread to the factory and the residential area nearby if it wasn’t noticed in time.

An urban village is located near the place where the fire broke out, and some plastic items burned, according to the report.

“I was doing what I should do. It was my job,” Li said. He has worked as a community worker since 2012 when he came to Shenzhen from Heyuan, Guangdong Province. He said he was happy to be friends with local residents and resolve problems for them.

“Community workers visit communities every day. Apart from registering residents’ information, they also make security patrols and provide community services for residents,” said Zeng Zhiming, the Guanhu community management center’s head.

Longhua New Area launched its community management center in January last year and set up branch offices in six subdistrict offices and 36 communities in the new area.
