Loose bolts led to elevator accident

LOOSE bolts on an elevator caused the collapse of an elevator step leading to the injury of an elderly man at the A Best Department Store in Bao’an District last week, a report by the Shenzhen Special Equipment Safety Inspection Research Institute showed.

The escalator maintenance company, Shenzhen Shengshida Elevator Co., should bear responsibility for the incident, according to the report.

The man was trapped in the gap between stairs Tuesday morning. He suffered a fractured left leg.

“The maintenance company replaced the pulling chain of the escalator between March 30 and April 2, and they should check all the stairs when replacing the chain. The maintenance company failed to follow the procedure of using new bolts to fix the steps to prevent the bolts from becoming loose,” said Wang Jue, deputy section chief of Bao’an’s market supervision bureau.
