A MAN has wholeheartedly embraced summer by creating his own eco-friendly, natural swimming pool — in his back garden.
David Pagan Butler, 54, a filmmaker from Saxthorpe, Norfolk, Britain, built a pool that serves as a fresh water habitat and works with plants and animals to provide hygienic water for swimming.
A circulation system driven by a standard aquarium air pump moves the water through plant beds, sand and gravel, down to drainage pipes — and the water is filtered by the micro-organisms living there.
As a result there is no need for chemical disinfectants like chlorine.
The pump only uses 30 watts, a tenth used by a regular swimming pool pumping system.
On average, an eco-friendly swimming pool costs around £6,000 (US$8,792) to build — but nothing to maintain.
Butler, a father-of-four, is now teaching others to do the same through the creation of an informative step-by-step self-build video, which has been viewed more than 5 million times on YouTube.
Natural pools from all around the world — including America, Brazil, Mongolia and Thailand — have been built thanks to Butler’s help.
He said, “I’ve always been interested in swimming in wild water, free from chemicals, because afterwards you feel so much better than if you had swam in a conventional pool.”
“I feel flattered to be part of this, for me making a pond is the greatest thing as people can help wildlife and help themselves. I’m just honored to be a part of this.” Butler claims people have said they feel restored after using the pools.(SD-Agencies)
