电子狗

diànzǐgǒu

Meaning: Literally translated as the "electronic dog," this term refers to a gadget installed by motorists in their vehicles to detect police radars and cameras. The device is designed to help drivers evade traffic monitoring. Popular several years ago, such gadgets are rarely used nowadays because many navigation apps have incorporated the function. Meanwhile, many Chinese drivers have developed better habits on the road and willingly obey traffic regulations.

Example

A: 你车尾箱怎么那么多垃圾?这是什么?

Nǐ chēwěixiāng zěnme nàmeduō lājī? Zhè shì shénme?

Why is there so much garbage in your trunk? What's this?

B: 这个是电子狗,几年前装的,后来没什么用就拆了。

Zhègè shì diànzǐgǒu, jǐnián qián zhuāng de, hòulái méi shénme yòng jìu chāi le。

This is a radar detector that I fitted in my car several years ago. I found it of little use and then took it down.

A: 扔掉算了,以后也用不着。

Rēngdiào suàn le, yǐhòu yě yòngbùzháo。

Just throw it away. You won't be using it anyway.
