    1. Kim’s aunt speaks up after years of silence

    North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has an aunt who is living anonymously* in the United States, where she runs a dry-cleaning business after having defected* in 1998, the Washington Post reported over the weekend.

    For nearly two decades, Ko Yong Suk and her husband, Ri Gang, have lived a modest, middle class existence, working long hours at their dry-cleaning business to provide a comfortable life and opportunities for their three children.

    Ko’s sister, the late Ko Yong Hui, was married to former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. Her nephew is Kim Jong Un, the country’s current leader.

    2. Body recovered after airplane crash

    A vintage* World War II plane flying in the New York area crashed in the Hudson River, killing one person, the New York Police Department said on Saturday.

    The body of a 56-year-old man, presumed* to be the pilot, was recovered in the river near the downed plane.

    Police identified the victim as William Gordon, from Key West, Florida. A distress* signal was sent before the one-seater plane crashed on Friday night, a police spokesman said.

    3. WHO rejects call to postpone Olympics

    THE World Health Organization on Saturday rejected a call from 150 health experts to consider postponing or moving the Rio Summer Olympics due to the Zika virus* in hard-hit Brazil, arguing that the shift would make no significant difference to the spread of the virus.

    The U.N. health agency said in a statement there is “no public health justification* for postponing or canceling the 2016 Games, which run from Aug. 5-21.

    Hundreds of thousands of people from around the world are expected to travel to Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian destinations this summer to see some 10,000 athletes compete at the Games.

    4. Ukraine blaze kills 17 at care home

    Seventeen people died when a makeshift* home for elderly people outside the Ukrainian capital Kiev caught fire in the early hours on Sunday, the latest tragedy to shake the conflict-riven* country.

    The fire tore through the two-story shelter for the elderly which is in the village of Litochky, located some 50 kilometers north of Kiev.

    “The bodies of 17 people have been found at the site of the fire,” the head of Ukraine’s state emergencies service, Mykola Chechotkin, said in comments released by his office.

    5. Indonesian pedophiles to get death

    Indonesia’s president on May 25 approved tough new punishments for child sex offenders*, including a maximum penalty of death and chemical castration*, after the brutal gang-rape and murder of a schoolgirl.

    Convicted pedophiles* could also be forced to wear electronic monitoring devices following their release from jail under new rules introduced in an emergency decree.

    “This regulation is intended to overcome the crisis caused by sexual violence against children,” President Joko Widodo said at the presidential palace in Jakarta.

    6. 668 migrants saved at sea

    A flotilla* of ships saved 668 migrants on Saturday from smugglers’ boats in distress in the Mediterranean Sea* off the coast of Libya, Italian authorities said — bringing the week’s total of migrants plucked* from the sea to a staggering* 13,000 people.

    The rescues by the Italian coast guard and navy ships, aided by Irish and German vessels and humanitarian groups, are the latest by a multinational patrol south of the Italian island of Sicily.

    The Irish military said the vessel Le Roisin saved 123 migrants from a 12-meter-long rubber dinghy and recovered a male body.(SD-Agencies)
