JIANG DANDAN, a former Shenzhen senior official’s daughter, pled guilty to bribery at Guangzhou People’s Intermediate Court on Tuesday.
Her father Jiang Zunyu, Shenzhen’s former law enforcement chief, also stood trial in Guangzhou on May 16 for allegedly taking huge bribes.
In court, Jiang Dandan admitted that she accepted bribes of 70,000 yuan (US$10,619) and a Porsche as a wedding gift from “acquaintances” of her father during his tenure.
The procuratorate accused Jiang Zunyu, a former member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and former chief of the city’s political and law committee, of taking bribes and facilitating business dealings for two real estate tycoons. The money and sports car were the commission given to Jiang Dandan by the two businessmen to show their “gratitude.”
According to Jiang Zunyu’s testimony in court, a real estate businessman sold a property with prices much lower than market value to his daughter. The property, valued at around 7 million yuan, was bought by Jiang Dandan at a discount of 55 percent.
Another real estate businessman gave a Porsche as a wedding gift to Jiang Dandan when she got married. Jiang Zunyu thought the sport car was too “high profile,” so he sold the car to a man named Li Weiping who transferred over 800,000 yuan to Jiang Dandan’s account later.
In January 2013, Jiang Zunyu asked his daughter to return the money earned by selling the car to Li and told other people that she was just borrowing the money.
“My father told me to do so because he wanted to protect me,” said Jiang during the trial Tuesday. But an investigation found that Li withdrew another 1 million yuan in cash and gave it to Jiang Dandan’s mother, Li Yan.
A subordinate of Jiang Zunyu, Tian Xiaohong, also sent seven “hongbao” (red envelopes) containing a total of 70,000 yuan to Jiang Dandan during the holidays.
Jiang Dandan was bailed out before the trial. The procuratorate said she “turned herself in” and might receive minor punishment, but the judge did not announce the ruling Tuesday.
According to prosecutors, Jiang Zunyu allegedly took bribes amounting to 32.65 million yuan and HK$46.7 million (US$6.01 million) between 1996 and 2014.
Jiang Zunyu held a series of high-level posts. He was the head of the Longgang sub-bureau of the city’s urban planning and land bureau, deputy office chief with the Longgang Grand Industrial Zone Administration Committee, deputy secretary general of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, head of the city’s water resources bureau, head of the city’s environmental commission, Longgang’s Party chief, and then the city’s top law enforcement official.
Of the 14 counts of bribery, four involved more than 10 million yuan.
