Parents wave flags with the slogan “Fighting” to students of Maotanchang High School before they leave to take the National College Entrance Exams, also known as the gaokao, in Lu’an City in Anhui Province, yesterday. Nearly 1,000 students of the school in 19 buses left for examination sites across Lu’an to sit the gaokao that starts tomorrow. The school has earned a reputation as a “gaokao mill,” having produced a large number of students to pass the national exams. In its prime time, the school had to arrange around 70 buses packed with more than 10,000 students to take the exams. The grueling test is deemed a “battle to determine fate,” as its results will decide whether a student goes to college, back to school for another year, or tries to find a job without college education.Xinhua
