A fortnight-long event with free entry featuring the movable-type printing, one of the Four Great Inventions of ancient China, will be held at Futian Cultural Hall from June 11 to 26.
Traditional movable-type printing presses, printed books and printing types made of different materials will be displayed, while visitors can print Chinese characters themselves. A prominent artisan Wang Chaohui will showcase the woodblock printing and his woodblock carving techniques.
Movable-type printing is a typography that uses movable components to reproduce the elements of a document. The world’s first-known movable-type printing was done with ceramics in China around A.D. 1040 by Bi Sheng (990–1051) during the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127).
