Anna Zhao anna.whizh@yahoo.com MORE than 90 landscape paintings by Chinese artist He Jia’an are on exhibit at the Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Futian District through June 22. Most of the landscapes under He’s brush were modeled on ordinary natural scenes but are beaming with vitality thanks to the artist’s efficient use of ink, neat lines and texturing. He, a native of the Dabie Mountain area in Henan Province, has been nurtured by the natural scenery in the mountainous area. The lush trees, tall peaks and steep valleys, as well as the farming life of people in Dabie Mountain are re-created in He’s art. His depiction of landscapes often gives a touch of softness and serenity, rather than a strong visual impact of a grand scene. For example, his painting of the Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River, a waterfall that is usually depicted as grand, is instead understated. He, who was trained in the 1980s in the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, is skilled at traditional Chinese painting owing to his diligent practice through the past decades. His work has been frequently showcased at top national art exhibitions.
