STANDING in front of the podium on behalf of international students to give a speech at the graduation ceremony of Shenzhen University, Jalal Bazwan, a student from Afghanistan, spoke fluent Chinese confidently and expressed a great expectation to learn more about China.

He has enrolled to continue studies at Shanxi University and his dream is to become a diplomat for his country.

“China is big, and it can embrace you,” said Bazwan, during his speech, using the remark given by his friend to encourage international students to stay in China and learn about Chinese culture no matter what difficulties they may encounter at first.

“When I couldn’t speak a single Chinese word and the cab driver couldn’t understand my English — I had failed so many times explaining I need a phone call to my friend — I grabbed the phone from the driver, leaving him dumbfounded, and let my friend explain everything to him,” said Bazwan.

Bazwan had his first meal, a bowl of rice, in a hotel in Shenzhen 30 hours after he left his hometown as he didn’t know what to eat.

In the first week, he still felt he wasn’t accustomed to the life here and wanted to go back.

“A friend encourages me to stay when I almost lost hope,” said Bazwan.

The graduation ceremony was attended by Bazwan’s grandfather, who traveled from Afghanistan to celebrate the graduation.

According to Wang Qingguo, dean of the College of International Exchange, 35 students from 12 countries will graduate from the college this year. Some have found jobs or will start businesses in China.

Tim Dolidze, a student from Kyrgyzstan, found a job at a high-tech company in Shenzhen.

“Shenzhen is a young city and after spending four years here, I love this city and have found a job here,” said Dolidze.

Dolidze refused to name the company but said it had expanded rapidly and its products make up 70 percent of the world market.

Also announced at the ceremony, Dong Haitao, editor-in-chief of the Shenzhen Daily, Zhuang Renliang, chairman with Shenzhen Zhongke World Robot Co. Ltd., Deng Weilin, chairman with Shenzhen Hongye Investment Holdings Group, and Zhao Wenfei, chairwoman with Yujian Group, were invited to be guest professors at the college. They will give lectures to students beginning next semester.
