Paintings by young artists
    2016-June-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

More than 100 pieces of artwork, including paintings and a few installations by 51 young Chinese artists, are now on exhibit at Guan Shanyue Art Museum through June 29.

Themed “Elite Young Artists Program,” the exhibition aims to explore the artistic development of artists who were born in the 1980s, a generation that generally received good training in art academies.

Most of the work, in the form of oil paintings, ink art, sculpture and installations, focus more on modern social life.

Curator Wei Xiangqi said the exhibits were selected from works submitted by more than 1,500 artists and the judging panel chose works that boast good artistic expressiveness and explore the nature of a painting, rather than work that relies excessively on symbolism and graphical representation.

“The group of artists born in the 1980s generally have similar life experiences at art academies. They have kept their ambition to distinguish themselves through their talent, although they head in different directions after leaving the art academy,” Wei said. “Most of them have shown great interest in the latest art development and emerging art languages and adopted these elements into their creations.”

Wei said that a great number of young artists have borrowed painting skills from the West and some of them are able to graft Western painting skills onto their work with maturity.

More than 100 traditional Chinese paintings by late artist Wang Youlnong are also being displayed on the museum’s first floor.

Wang, a native of Nanling in eastern China’s Anhui Province, was known for painting landscapes, birds and flowers, common subjects with Chinese literati.
