Xiamen's Cat-tastic island
    2016-06-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

TASHIROJIMA in Japan is seen as a “holy land” for many cat lovers in China. This small island is known as “Cat Island” due to the large numbers of wild cats wandering around the fishing villages. However, many people do not know that there is also a place in China where one can satisfy their penchant for cats. This place is Xiamen, Fujian Province, a beautiful coastal city that is not far from Shenzhen.

    Ding’aozai Cat Street

Located across Nanhua Road in downtown Xiamen, Ding’aozai Cat Street is a street known for its cute cats.

Since ancient times, fishing has been a core industry in Xiamen, and Ding’aozai was a major spot for fishermen to dry their fish. Cats do not like water, so they won’t eat fish unless they have to. Therefore, many locals bred cats in the area to catch mice and protect their fish. Gradually, cats came to outnumber people in the area. As the development of the city continued, Ding’aozai gradually transformed into a modern residential community. Many cats lost their territory. In order to protect these cats, the government transformed the street into a cat-friendly area.

Everything along this Cat Street is about cats. Sculptures, graffiti, posters, cafés and shops are all dedicated to and themed around cats. Many residents and stores also breed cats, allowing them to wander around the street peacefully.

In 2014, a Cat Museum opened on the street. The museum tells the story about the cats and showcases cat-themed art pieces.

Another highlight of the street is cat graffiti.

Most of the buildings are covered by cat-themed graffiti. The graffiti was painted by university students from different ethnic groups, including the Han, Tibetans and Mongolians. They spent almost one year painting the entire street, transforming this old residential street into a modern and artistic landmark.

    Gulangyu Island

As the most famous spot in Xiamen, Gulangyu may be more widely known by the world for its beautiful island scenes, ancient mansions and piano culture. However, it is actually a “cat island” in China.

Gulangyu does not have much traffic, so it is an ideal place for cats to live. Cats on the island tend to be relaxed lying in the middle of the street and sitting quietly on roofs by the road.

There are four celebrity cats on the island, including Zhang Sanfeng, Liu Miaotiao, Fanta and Yimao. These are domestic cats owned by local islanders, and they have gained wide popularity on the Internet.

    Visitors won’t ‘egret’ it

As a popular tourist destination in China, Xiamen is also famous for its attractive seascape, fresh air and clean environment. It has been called the Egret Island as it is home to hundreds of thousands of egrets.

The city also has abundant tourist attractions such as islands, mountains, temples and parks. On the list is also South Putuo Temple, Jimei, Hulishan Canon Platform, Wanshouyan Park and Xiamen University.

Xiamen is also a city of relaxation. There are many spas across the area. Most spas have salt water heated to more than 40 degrees Celsius. Popular spas include the Riyue Valley spa, the Cuifeng spa and Daxi spa.

The city has many romantic cafes and Western-style restaurants by the sea. Local delicacies include fish-ball soup, bamboo shoot cake, oyster omelets, sweet peanut soup and sugar pancake.

There are also plenty of local specialties to be added to your shopping list, such as various kinds of tea leaves, fruits and seafood.

Transport: Take a high-speed train to Xiamen from Shenzhen North Railway Station and take a taxi to Ding’aozai Cat Street and ferry to Gulangyu Island.(Wang Yuanyuan)
