Ikea probed over dressers
    2016-July-4  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Shenzhen Consumer Council issued an investigation letter to Ikea on Friday after the Swedish company continued selling its Malm dresser in Chinese outlets. The dresser has been recalled in North America after it caused the deaths of six children who were crushed under the chests since 1989, the Shenzhen Evening News reported Saturday.

The council issued the investigation letter to Ikea Friday afternoon after the council staff found the involved Malm dressers available for sale in Ikea’s outlet in Nanshan District. Free wall attachment kits were offered to customers buying the chests.

According to the investigation letter, the council has three questions for Ikea — What kind of Malm dresser has been recalled and what was the reason for the recall? Are the recalled dressers being sold in China? What are Ikea’s remedial measures for similar products that might pose a danger to customers?

Ikea’s public relations manager Peng Weiqiang said free wall attachment kits were offered to customers beginning early this year and customers could request a free kit from the company. “We didn’t get any notification about recalling the Malm dressers in China. If customers are concerned about safety issues, they can return the products,” Peng said.

During a citywide quality inspection for children’s products last year, Ikea’s Shenzhen branch had four sets of children’s products that failed inspections due to safety hazards, according to the report.
