Shanghai Shaoxing Opera House will present “Bronze Sparrow Platform” this weekend.

    Shaoxing opera is the second most popular opera form out of over 360 opera genres in China. Originating in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province in 1906, Shaoxing opera features actresses in male roles, presenting femininity in terms of singing, performing, and staging. It is highly popular in Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Fujian, while its audience is growing all over China.

    Set in the Three Kingdoms period (220-280) of Chinese history, “Bronze Sparrow Platform” centers on Lady Zhen (or Zhen Luo), the first wife of Cao Pi, the first ruler of the state of Wei. The drama is about Lady Zhen’s romance with Cao Pi’s brother Cao Zhi before her marriage, even though this romance is never supported by history records.
