Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will present Reinecke’s “Flute Concerto in D Major, Op. 283” and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5.” SSO’s chief flautist Ma Yong will be soloist.
Reinecke’s flute concerto has been compared to other works of the era. Geoffrey Norris of Gramophone called it a “substantial work” and said it “makes amends for the fact that Brahms never wrote a concerto for flute.”
The first Chinese flautist accepted by The Julliard School, Ma earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the prestigious New York conservatory. His list of awards includes first place at the 2003 Young Artist Competition of the U.S. National Flute Association, the 2002 New York Flute Club Competition and the 2000 Young Artist Competition of the Flute Society of Washington.
