A SKYDIVER will leap out of a plane at 25,000 feet (7,620 meters) without a parachute and attempt to land safely in the California desert.
American Luke Aikins will use a mystery device to make his perilous descent, which will be shown during a live television broadcast dubbed “Heaven Sent” on July 30.
It is claimed the married 42-year-old third-generation skydiver, who has made about 18,000 jumps in his 25-year career, will use only air currents and “nothing but the clothes on his back.”
“Whenever people attempt to push the limits of what’s considered humanly possible, they’re invariably described as crazy,” said Aikins. “But to me, this jump is simply the next logical step in a lifetime of extreme challenges.”
He will land on his back on equipment which organizers would only describe as a “slide.”
“I’m going to do something that’s definitely out there and most people in the world will think is crazy,” Aikins said. Aikins, who claims it will be a world record for jumping without a parachute, previously worked with Felix Baumgartner on the Austrian daredevil’s 2012 record skydive which started 24 miles above the earth.
Aikins has done movie stunt work for blockbusters like “Godzilla” and “Iron Man 3,” serves as a safety and training advisor for the United States Parachute Association.
