Screaming children and your screaming mind: Are these sounds the same or different? Rustling wind and a little girls giggle: Do they play your heartstrings in the same way? You are invited to quiet your mind, listen to the soundscapes of urban village Baishizhou and hear your heart beats.
Chinese artist Zhang Mengtai will display the sounds he recorded in Baishizhou for the Handshake 302 artist-in-residence project Sunday afternoon.
A graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London, Zhang is the current artist-in-residence at Handshake 302, an urban village research project organized by U.S. anthropologist Mary Ann O’Donnell. At the event, Zhang will share his knowledge about sound creation, documentation, and what it means to listen.
Zhang visited Shenzhen several times when he was a child and has deep memories of the city. He is interested in the subtle structures of everyday life, and how they create material dependency and contradictions. He will be at Handshake 302 for two months, exploring these questions.
