Meaning:

    It’s a fad to label different kinds of people by the name of fruits, such as the strawberry clan (good-looking but easily bruised). “榴莲,” literally meaning “durian,” is a smelly fruit with a hard shell full of spike protuberances. Therefore, the “durian clan” refers to those who have been in the workforce for some time, are bad-tempered and difficult to get along with. The term first appeared in “Mickey Mouse,” a song by Taiwan singer Ashin, member of the band Mayday. The lyrics read: “You are one of the durian clan, stubborn and harsh on me.”

    B: 一般。我们办公室里有个大叔是榴莲族，经常数落我。

    Yībān。Wǒmen bàngōngshì lǐ yǒu gè dàshū shì líuliánzú, jīngcháng shǔluò wǒ。

    Not great. There’s a middle-aged man in my office who’s one of the durian clan. He criticizes me a lot.
