American rock band Of Montreal will perform at B10 Live this weekend.
From Athens, Georgia, Of Montreal was founded by frontman Kevin Barnes in 1996, named after a failed romance between Barnes and a woman “of Montreal.” The band’s musical style has evolved considerably and drawn inspiration from numerous 1960s psychedelic pop acts.
The current lineup is Barnes (singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter), Clayton Rychlik (drums, keys, guitar, bass), Jojo Glidewell (keys), Davey Pierce (bass) and Nicolas Dobbratz (keys, percussion, bass, guitar).
The group has recorded 13 studio albums, beginning with “Cherry Peel,” and, most recently, “Aureate Gloom,” which was released in 2015 by Polyvinyl Records. While melodic pop has always been Barnes’ primary vehicle, his style has managed to transform significantly since the 1997 release of “Cherry Peel.” The acoustic tendencies of earlier albums gradually transformed into a more electronic, funk, and overall eclectic sound. One of the features which often appears in Barnes’ songwriting is his penchant for composing upbeat melodies to gloomy lyrics and morose subject matter. At different periods in the band’s career he has dealt with subjects both personal and fictional. He is a prolific lyricist with a tendency to employ unusual words, phrases and complicated wordplay.
