Beijing opera show by master Wang Peiyu
    2016-August-19  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Beijing opera artist Wang Peiyu from Shanghai Beijing Opera Theater will present “Beating the Drum and Cursing Cao Cao” this weekend at Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center.

Wang is known for her insightful portrayals of male figures in Beijing opera. She is a follower of the Yu style, whose forefather Yu Shuyan is considered one of the most prominent sheng (male) practitioners in Beijing opera history. Wang is known for her exceptional vocal skills and gestures and is recognized as a new leader in playing male roles in Beijing opera. She once said, “There lies a unique aesthetic value in women’s portrayal of male roles. A good performer can even outdo her male peers in terms of exquisite performance and appeal in general.”

“Beating the Drum and Cursing Cao Cao” is set in the late Han Dynasty. Around year 196, warlord Cao Cao joined Emperor Xian and convinced him to move the capital to Xuchang, as Luoyang was ruined by war and Chang’an was not under Cao’s military control. Cao was appointed chancellor. Some then viewed the emperor as a puppet under Cao’s control.

Writer Mi Heng moved to Xuchang, like many others, to escape the chaos of the collapsing Han Dynasty. He was recommended to work for Cao, who would later invite him to a banquet Cao was hosting. Mi, however, had a low opinion of Cao and refused the invitation. Cao was then outraged and ordered Mi to play drums for the guests at the banquet. Mi couldn’t refuse, so while he played drums, he cursed Cao’s name.
