THE Shenzhen Municipal Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Peking University (PKU) on building a Shenzhen campus on the basis of the existing Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School yesterday in Guangzhou.

The mayor of Shenzhen, Xu Qin, inked the MOU with Lin Jianhu, president of Peking University, under the witness of Hu Chunhua, Party chief of Guangdong Province.

At yesterday’s signing ceremony, Ma Xingrui, Shenzhen’s Party chief, expressed his gratitude to Peking University for supporting education in Guangdong Province as well as that in Shenzhen.

According to SZTV’s evening news, the university will set up arts, science and medical schools in Shenzhen and the MOU signed yesterday specifically listed the plan to build a world-class affiliated hospital with the medical school’s premium educational and talent resources.

Peking University, together with Tsinghua University, have long been regarded as China’s top universities. Peking University had never set up undergraduate schools in any city other than Beijing. The setting up of an undergraduate campus in Shenzhen is an unprecedented step for the time-honored university.

It is not the first time Shenzhen and Peking University have cooperated. The university first settled in Shenzhen 15 years ago by establishing the Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School.

Also, the university supported Shenzhen’s health-care system by turning a municipal hospital into the current Peking University Shenzhen Hospital in Futian District in 2001.

The Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau also disclosed that Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Wuhan University were negotiating with the Shenzhen government to establish educational institutions in the city, adding to several other projects inked with international universities including Queensland University of Australia and Moscow University of Russia.
