I bet most of you have seen this one. Moreover, I am sure that, on seeing this picture, everyone is shocked and extremely sad. Yes, when I saw this picture online, I was so sad that I cried for this little boy but is it enough? Apart from being sad, how much do we know about the boy? What has happened to him? What was the sad story behind his death? Besides being simply touched, we need to put aside the picture and read more to really find the boy’s story. We need to get to know what the world has done to him and how we can change the situation. I have to admit that a picture is powerful. It instantly offers us a vivid experience. However, a picture is limited, it is just one dimension. Even 3D pictures are limited to one single angle. We are living in a world drowned in numerous pictures. When I am on my way to school, I see huge and beautiful advertisements along the street. When I browse my cellphone, I see my friend Lily posting amazing pictures of her traveling, with delicious food when she is eating in a luxurious restaurant. When I have class, my teachers will show me beautiful pictures besides words. Seeing these pictures, I feel refreshed and interested. However, I never think these pictures are all that I want to know. I know pictures fail to tell me more important information. I am sure my friends will tell me more interesting stories about their travels instead of just showing me photos. As well, my teachers and my textbooks will teach me more important knowledge through words rather than through pictures. As for me, I can’t make a speech in 1,000 or even 10,000 pictures, but I can make a speech that is less than 500 words and this is the power of words. If we conclude that pictures make the world more colorful, it is words that make the world more meaningful. So here comes my opinion, a picture is not really worth one thousand words. |
