Meaning:
Literally meaning “a small target,” this term became an Intermet meme on the mainland these two days after Wang Jianlin, founder and chairman of Dalian Wanda Group, used it to define a fortune of “100 million yuan” during a talk show program Friday. “You shouldn’t be that ambitious. Set a small target first, like earning 100 million yuan (US$15 million),” Wang said on “A Date With Luyu.” He delivered advice on how young people who want to become wealthy should plan ahead. His statement went viral on social media such as Sina Weibo and WeChat. Now people use the term jokingly to refer to “targets” of all kinds.
Example:
A: 听说你准备买车了?
Tīngshuō nǐ zhǔnbèi mǎi chē le?
So you’re going to buy a car?
B: 是啊,终于摇到车牌号了。
Shì a, zhōngyú yáodào chēpáihào le。
Yeah. I finally get a license plate through the lottery.
A: 打算买哪款车?
Dǎsuàn mǎi nǎkuǎn chē?
Which model are you thinking of buying?
B: 先不考虑玛莎拉蒂,小目标是福特福克斯。
Xiān bù kǎolǜ mǎshālādì, xiǎomùbiāo shì fútè fúkèsī。
I’m not considering Maserati right now. My small target now is a Ford Focus.
