Van Gogh’s ear for music
    2016-September-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A: My uncle managed just fine in the music industry even though he has a Van Gogh’s ear for music.

    B: What’s his deal?

A: He used to run a ticket booking network, but now he’s retired.

Note: Vincent Van Gogh, a well-known painter, is said to have cut off a piece of his left ear for a lover, leaving him partially deaf. So to say someone has “Van Gogh’s ear for music” is akin to calling the said person tone deaf, that is, someone who cannot understand the differences between musical tones. When referred to a singer it implies that they are not good and tend to go off key a lot.
