Reigning single’s champion Tomas Berdych, former world No. 7 Richard Gasquet and top Belgian David Goffin will play at the 2016 Shenzhen Open to be held Sept. 24-Oct. 2 at the Longgang Sports Center.

    One of the most popular players among Chinese tennis enthusiasts, Berdych sets to defend his title at the 2016 Shenzhen Open. The Czech player’s most notable achievement was reaching the final of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, causing consecutive upsets by defeating top seed and six-time champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinals, and world No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. Berdych has reached the semifinals of all four Grand Slams. He also played the longest ATP doubles match ever.

    After a hiatus last year, Gasquet will return to the 2016 Shenzhen Open. Gasquet is a French tennis player currently ranked world No. 10. He won the mixed doubles Grand Slam title at the 2004 French Open, partnering with Tatiana Golovin. He also won an Olympic bronze medal in 2012 with his doubles partner Julien Benneteau.

    His career-high singles ranking is world No. 7, achieved in July 2007. In singles, his best achievements were reaching the semifinals of the 2007 and 2015 Wimbledon Championships and the semifinals of the 2013 U.S. Open. Gasquet is best known for his long-winding groundstrokes and his one-handed backhand.

    The 2016 Shenzhen Open also sees the debut of Goffin, whose breakthrough came when he reached the fourth round of the 2012 French Open, eventually losing to Federer in four sets. Goffin has defeated several high-ranking players such as John Isner, Stan Wawrinka, Viktor Troicki, Milos Raonic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Berdych, the latter without losing a game.
