Checkpoint closed

    FUTIAN Checkpoint was closed for half an hour Saturday afternoon after a case of lithium batteries carried by an inbound passenger caught fire.

    The checkpoint was closed at 6:09 p.m., leaving many travelers stranded at the checkpoint. The checkpoint reopened at around 6:40 p.m.

    Scammer arrested

    A WOMAN who cheated 19 people out of 3 million yuan (US$449,800) was recently arrested in Longhua.

    The woman Xu owned a clothing shop in Boluo County, Huizhou City, but owed a heavy debt because of gambling. She borrowed around 3 million yuan from her friends and relatives by promising high interest rate up to 10 percent, but disappeared in February 2012.

    Xu hid herself in different places such as Heyuan, Meizhou and used her sister’s ID to work.
