    古惑仔

    gǔhuòzǎi

Meaning: A term from Cantonese dialect, this phrase originally referred to those who are smart and shrewd, but nowadays it refers to teenagers or those in their early 20s who pursue an unconventional lifestyle and behavior. They wear weird hairstyles, clothing and accessories. They smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and get into street fights. A Hong Kong movie series based on comic books by this name made the term widely known among Chinese language speakers.

    Example

    A: 你弟弟念大学了吧?

Nǐ dìdì niàn dàxué le ba?

Is your younger brother in college now?

    B: 没有,他从前天天和一帮古惑仔一起混,不好好读书,没考上大学。

Méiyǒu, tā cóngqián tiāntiān hé yībāng gǔhuòzǎi yīqǐ hùn, bù hǎohǎo dúshū, méi kǎoshàng dàxué。

No. He used to hang out with the juvenile delinquents and did not learn his books, so he didn't get enroled in any college.
