3,300 nabbed China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on Sunday said police have arrested over 3,300 people for stealing and trading private information of Chinese citizens via the Internet in a national campaign. The suspects were linked to over 1,200 criminal cases, the MPS said. They include 270 insiders* from banking, education, telecommunication, securities and other sectors, in addition to some 90 professional hackers. In one case, it said, 13 people led by a suspect surnamed Qiu gained access to 60 million items of private information linked to shopping portals. Michelin eatery shut A German-owned restaurant in Shanghai was ordered to close just one day after winning a Michelin star because it did not have a business license, the city’s market watchdog said. Tai’an Table, on the first floor of a garden villa in Changning District, was among 26 restaurants listed in the Michelin Guide Shanghai 2017, released on September 21. The next day, the restaurant received an order from the district’s commercial administration department to close its doors. Great Wall reparations An investigation has dismissed accusations over the repair of the Great Wall in Suizhong County, Liaoning Province, according to Saturday’s Beijing News. The section of the Great Wall, known for its historical wildness, is now barely recognizable. Pictures showing the paved-over* section have triggered widespread criticism. Netizens have complained how the wall’s historical quality has been ruined by this new road-like appearance. A joint investigation team of both State and provincial heritage authorities looked into the incident on Friday. University rankings A total of 52 universities from the Chinese mainland are included in the 13th edition of World University Rankings published on September 21, with Peking University and Tsinghua University ranking 29th and 35th respectively. Seven universities from the Chinese mainland are included in the top 400 list and two universities from Hong Kong made into the top 50 list, namely, The University of Hong Kong (joint 43rd) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (49th).
