    Come join the free Futian English Movie Salon. Watch an English movie and communicate with like-minded people in English. This Friday, “Room” will be shown and it only has English subtitles.

    Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, “Room” is a 2015 Canadian-Irish independent drama film. Held captive for seven years in an enclosed space, a woman (Brie Larson) and her 5-year-old son (Jacob Tremblay) finally gain their freedom, allowing the boy to experience the outside world for the first time.

    Meanwhile, “Elle” and “The Dressmaker” will be shown free of admission Saturday and Sunday afternoon respectively at Whatever Cafe in OCT-LOFT. The movies will be in their original languages with Chinese subtitles. “Elle” is a 2016 French-German-Belgian psychological thriller starring Isabelle Huppert. The film tells the story of a businesswoman, Michele, who is raped in her home by an unknown assailant and stalks him back.

    “The Dressmaker” is a 2015 Australian revenge comedy-drama film and stars Kate Winslet as a femme fatale in the titular role of the dressmaker, Myrtle “Tilly” Dunnage, who returns to a small Australian town to take care of her ailing, mentally unstable mother. The film explores the themes of revenge and creativity and was described by Moorhouse as “Clint Eastwood’s ‘Unforgiven’ with a sewing machine.”
