5-time Olympic gold medalist Chen retires
    2016-October-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CHINA’S multiple Olympic gold-medal-winning diver Chen Ruolin announced her shock retirement from the national team — aged just 23, yesterday.

Team manager Zhou Jihong said Chen decided to call it a day after the Rio Games due to a nagging neck injury.

“She has a neck injury that may cause some problems if she continues with her career,” said Zhou.

“Chen had great courage to get past the Rio Games but now she has virtually retired. She could still have a lot more to offer due to her age. But it is very hard for her to continue because of the injury.”

Chen won the champion of synchronized 10-meter platform diving with her partner Liu Huixia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the youngest five-time gold medalist in Olympic history.

She won the gold medals in the women’s 10-meter platform and 10-meter synchronized platform at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing for China, then duplicated the double gold performance at the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
