GUANGZHOU Evergrande Tao-bao set a new record by winning a sixth consecutive Chinese Super League (CSL) title after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Yanbian Funde.
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side needed just a point from the fixture in order to put itself out of the reach of Jiangsu Sainty in second and the side was successful.
Former Tottenham midfielder Paulinho struck from close range on the stroke of halftime, proving to be key just as he was in helping Evergrande to the title last season.
The visitors hit back two minutes from the end through Yoon Bit-garam, but it was not enough to keep Jiangsu’s title aspirations alive.
Scolari’s side held on to continue its Super League domination, with this its sixth league title ever.
Guangzhou also became China’s first AFC Champions League winner in 2013 and regained the title in 2015.
Evergrande was relegated to China’s second tier in 2010 during a corruption crackdown but the side won immediate promotion back into the Super League and has not looked back.
Brazil’s Scolari is the current coach but Evergrande tore up a deal to bring another World Cup-winning manager, Marcello Lippi, back to the club next season.
Evergrande stepped aside to allow the Italian to take the helm at China’s national team, which is struggling once again in the latest round of World Cup qualifiers.(SD-Agencies)
