National Theater Live from Britain will broadcast “Frankenstein” at Shenzhen Grand Theater on Nov. 13. The play will be in English with Chinese subtitles.
National Theater Live is an initiative operated by the Royal National Theater in London, which broadcasts live performances of their productions to theaters, cinemas and arts centers across the world. Cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the “best seat in the house” for each production.
“Frankenstein” is a stage adaptation by Nick Dear of the novel of the same name. Its world premiere was at the Royal National Theater in 2011. This production is directed by Danny Boyle with a cast including Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, with the two lead actors alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. Cumberbatch and Miller shared both the Olivier Award and London Evening Standard Award for Best Actor for their respective performances. The Critics’ Circle Theater Awards’ Best Performance by an Actor in a Play was given to Cumberbatch.
Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.
