MORE than 20 people were injured following Sunday’s NASCAR race at Martinsville Speedway in the United States, where reports indicated a car drove into a crowd.
It appeared the injuries were not life-threatening. What caused them was not immediately confirmed.
“All we know now is a vehicle, we don’t know exactly what happened with the vehicle, did run into at least 10 pedestrians and we’re treating the ones we can take to the (infield) care center here,” speedway president Clay Campbell told Motorsport.com.
The driver pulled out of line, hit a Jeep, then struck “six or seven people and ran one person all the way over,” witness Roger Wolfe told USA Today.
ESPN later reported that 22 were injured in the incident.
It appeared the incident took place about half an hour after Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Martinsville.
According to reports, the car struck spectators awaiting drivers at the track’s helicopter pad.
