Hot button issues
    2016-November-3  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A: What’s your stand on the hot button issue of abortion?

B: I think it’s an undeniable right of women, although responsible folks should avoid unwanted pregnancy in the first place.

Note: “Hot button” is a slang term meaning something that elicits a strong emotional response or reaction, usually a controversial subject. It literally refers to the red knob we see on some electric water boilers. That’s the red button and there’s a green button. The green button is the control for cold water. You push the red button, and hot water streams out. If the water is boiling hot and you hit the hot button inadvertently, you may get yourself burned. Hence as a metaphor, when people talk about “hot button issues” in politics, they mean issues that are emotionally charged and make people angry.
