To mark the 10th anniversary of the Chop Project, a musical collaboration between artists from China and Poland, a series of live performances and events will be held in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Entry is free.
Founded by Shenzhen experimental musician Zen Lu and Polish artist Grzegorz Bojanek in 2006, the ChoP Project (standing for “China-Poland”) is a unique transnational initiative that includes sound and visual artists from China and Poland. It has provided an opportunity for Chinese and Polish artists to interact and collaborate with each other across two continents.
In their early days, the artists only collaborated online. The first joint live act was held by Bojanek and Lu in Czestochowa in Poland. Then in 2009, artists from Poland were invited by their Chinese counterparts to spend two weeks visiting Chinese cities such as Shenzhen, Foshan, Changsha, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
Since 2006, many artists have been invited to join the ChoP Project. They recorded albums and performed live acts both in China and Europe. Some of these events were supported by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland. It has become a platform for artists to brainstorm new ideas, perform gigs and record albums.
In 2010, some artists of the ChoP Project were invited by the British independent film director Isaac Julien to compose a soundtrack for his nine-screen video installation “Ten Thousand Waves,” starring Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung. Later, Lu and Bojanek were invited by Julien to join him during the 8th Shanghai Biennale and perform improvised music for his one-screen version of the installation called “Better Life.”
Since 2007, Lu has been organizing events for international artists to perform experimental and electronic music in Shenzhen. Apart from these, he also composes soundtracks for dramas and movies. With his meticulous and minimalist digital music style, Lu has played a major role in bringing a new wave of art activities to Shenzhen.
Bojanek consequently introduces field recordings and electroacoustic sounds into his compositions that are the combination of the melodic ambient, guitar sounds and sometimes noise. In 2012 he recorded an album with Polish musician Piotr Michalowski entitled “As Far As It Seems” that was published by well-known New York label OHM Resistance.
