    HK law interpretation

    Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said on Monday that the Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government will fully implement the interpretation* passed by China’s top legislature concerning oath-taking* by public officers specified in Article 104 of the SAR’s Basic Law.

    Leung told a press conference that as the chief executive of the SAR, he has the duty to implement the Basic Law. Hong Kong is an inalienable* part of China, and the Hong Kong people have the duty to uphold national unity, territorial integrity and security, he said.

    Love insurance

    Known as Singles’ Day in China, the November 11 online buying frenzy* falls at the end of this week, with gifts for lovers and partners making up the bulk of purchases.

    According to sanqin.com, however, this year there’s a rise in popularity for “ love insurance.” One undergraduate surnamed Ning splashed out on love insurance for him and his girlfriend. In the policy it says that they will get a cash payout or roses, so long as they get married between three and 13 years after the insurance comes into force.

    Extreme air pollution

    The Ministry of Environmental Protection of China said on Sunday that industrial emissions*, vehicle exhaust* fumes and heating reliant on coal were three main factors that caused widespread air pollution across China in the past week.

    Smog enveloped more than 30 cities in six provinces, from Heilongjiang’s Harbin City in Northeast China to Jiangsu and Anhui provinces in East China, spanning more than 1,600 kilometers.

    Student stabbed to death

    A Chinese university student in Tokyo was found dead with multiple stab wounds in her neck at the corridor of her apartment on Thursday.

    The victim, Jiang Ge, was in her 20s and from Qingdao, Shandong Province. She was currently completing her postgraduate* in Japan, the Beijing Youth Daily reported. Jiang’s roommate called the police after she heard a scream and a bang on the door that night. Jiang was immediately sent to hospital after the police arrived. She was confirmed dead shortly after.
