Pingshan, major area of city’s ‘Going East Strategy’

AS one of the most important areas in Shenzhen’s “Going East Strategy” put forward by the municipal government this year, Pingshan has been gradually quickening its steps to provide a favorable economic environment and pleasant living conditions for enterprises and residents.

The city plans to build an eastern center in Shenzhen, including Pingshan and Longgang District. The plan will help to advance transportation, industrial upgrading, public service and urban development in the two areas.

Over the past few months, great news has constantly arrived in the area. For instance, in transportation, the city has decided to construct more roads linking the new area with other districts of the city. It will only take 45 minutes to drive from Pingshan to the city center, Futian District.

The city will spend a total of 32.9 billion yuan (US$4.8 billion) in constructing a more efficient transportation system for Pingshan. The Shenzhen Metro Lines 14 and 16 will connect Pingshan with the downtown area. The construction of the metro lines is expected to start next year.

Also, large-scale enterprises and groups such as OCT East and Unis Software have inked cooperative deals with Pingshan.

Universities are also rushing into Pingshan for the vast land and the integrative industry bases in the area. Shenzhen Technology University’s preparatory office has already been inaugurated. The Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Guangdong Provincial Stomatological Hospital all signed deals to jointly build a college in the area.

Pingshan has attracted investment from 66 listed companies, and 11 Fortune 500 enterprises have set up factories or offices in the new area. It has 25 kilometers of usable land to be developed, while over 30,000 government-subsidized apartments are under construction in Pingshan, outnumbering other districts and new areas in Shenzhen, according to official data.

Shenzhen is about to invest 1.6 trillion yuan, equal to about US$254 billion, in an ambitious plan called the “Going East Strategy” to develop its eastern areas.

The strategy is an important decision by the city to implement China’s Belt and Road Initiative and enhance cooperation between Pearl River Delta cities. The funding will go to 355 projects covering traffic infrastructure, industrial upgrades, public services and urban development.
